When I was in university, I lived on a boat for a few months – it was a fun experience!

I studied archaeology and spent a short time working in an old fort that was supposed to be haunted.

What do you think is special about Gnokids compared to other English Schools?

So many things! The most visible point that sets us apart is that we have two teachers in the classroom, and both of these teachers have equally important roles – one isn’t there just as an assistant. This means that our students get a lot of exposure to real, native-level conversation even when the English isn’t directed specifically at them. I’ve noticed that, because of this, our students have excellent listening abilities! They’re always surprising me with how much of our instructions they come to understand, and also how much they can produce completely unprompted.

What is most important to you when teaching children?

For me, the most important thing is being able to connect with the children. If they enjoy coming to class and spending time with us then they will naturally want to communicate with us too. We need to be able to adapt the lessons and activities according to each student’s likes and dislikes as well as their English abilities and individual needs to make an environment in which they feel comfortable and happy – and excited to be a part of!

What do you think has helped your students improve the most?

Children are excellent learners, so I think one thing that helps them improve is to remember that they can handle fairly complex structures if they’re presented in a meaningful way. For example, rather than having them ask for a crayon using, “blue, please”, if you give them the opportunity to say, “Can I have a blue crayon, please?” they’ll often be able to start using it after a few times of hearing it. One of our jobs as teachers is to help the students realise that they are all very capable of doing well, and to give them the tools they need to succeed.

たとえば、“blue, please”を使ってクレヨンが欲しいことを尋ねるのではなく、“Can I have a blue crayon, please?”

If you had an extra hour in the day what would you do?

probably spend some time practising watercolour painting.

What’s your favourite children’s book?

There are a lot of books I love. Recently, I discovered Odd Dog Out by Rob Biddulph. It’s about a sausage dog who feels like she doesn’t fit in and goes in search of somewhere that she does. The illustrations are bright and colourful, it has a nice rhythm, and a great message about it being okay to be different.

What are your favourite places in Japan?

I like going on driving trips and discovering new temples and shrines that are totally off the beaten track. The tourist places are beautiful of course, but there’s something exciting about finding an old shrine hidden away in the woods without a single other person around.

What do you miss most about England?

There are lots of things, of course, but I really miss the architecture. When I lived there, when the weather was nice (it does happen!) I’d often have picnics or just hang out in the grounds of the castle near my house, I really miss that!
