What do you think is special about GnoKids compared to other kids English schools?

Our teachers & staff! I truly believe that there is no kids English school in Japan like ours. Our teachers and staff run every aspect of our school and company. On any given day, in addition to teaching lessons, you would see some of our teachers working together to write lesson plans and make lesson materials. Other teachers might be playing the piano and singing, creating and recording GnoKids original songs and chants. Another teacher may be working with our video editor to create our homework videos. Other teachers may be having a meeting about how to improve aspects of our curriculum. At no other eikaiwa in Japan will you find a more talented and motivated group of people dedicated to helping your children learn how to speak English. Every day, I am humbled and inspired to work harder by the GnoKids teachers and staff around me.

What is most important to you when teaching kids?

For me, the most important thing when teaching kids is making sure that we are giving individualized care to each student. I’m always looking around to make sure that each child is focused, having fun, and understanding the activity. One of the most difficult aspects about teaching kids in an eikaiwa is that you always have students of varying levels of English ability in the same class. Some students may be complete beginners, while other students may have been learning English for two years. Because we have two teachers in a class at GnoKids and our teacher: ratio is small, we are able to adjust the way we approach each student and make sure that each student is improving according to their level.

What do you think has helped your students improve the most?

Having two teachers in the classroom! The class environment and atmosphere is much more fun with two native-level teachers in a class. Also, students are hearing so much rich language, and students begin to say phrases that they have never learned for homework. I remember when one student said “I can’t find my card. Where is it?! Oh, it’s over here!” We had never taught any of this in class, but after hearing the teachers speak to one another, they were just picking up natural language and using it in context. This is really exciting to see!

“I can’t find my card. Where is it?! Oh, it’s overhere!” こんな言い回しを教えた事も無いのに、講師の会話を聞いて自然に身につけ、状況に応じて使ったのです。こういうことを実感できる時が一番嬉しいです!

If you could live anywhere else in the world, where would it be?

Probably Spain because I love the Spanish coast, and I can speak a bit of Spanish.

What comprise some of your happiest moments at GnoKids?

I love when students or parents tell us about how their children have improved, have come to love English, or how much they are speaking English at home. One mom told us that English because her son’s favorite subject in elementary school and that he even tries watching the news in English! Stories like this motivate me to keep making our schools and classes better and better!

If you had one extra free hour each day, how would you use it?

Relaxing and reading at a nice café.

What are three things left on your bucket list?

    (a) Learning a brand new language
    (b) Going to language school in South America or Spain
    (c) Go rock climbing in Europe

    (a) 新しい言語をゼロから学ぶ
    (b) 南アメリカかスペインで言語学校に行く
    (c) ヨーロッパでロッククライミングをする
