What do you think is special about GnoKids compared to other kids English schools?

At GnoKids, each class is team-taught by two native level English speakers. With two teachers leading the class together, students are exposed to natural English conversation throughout the entire class, which allows students to have conversations themselves, rather than simply repeating after one teacher. Since teachers at our school come from many different countries, children are exposed to different accents and nuanced ways of speaking, which enhances their English listening skills! Finally, having two teachers allows for each student to receive more individual attention and support during the class, enabling a closer relationship between students and teachers.

What is most important to you when teaching children?

It is important for me to make sure that each child is having fun while still being challenged. Learning a new language isn’t easy, so having elements to make it enjoyable is crucial for young learners. This means filling the class with games, songs, and dances! When a class is fun, children are excited to actively participate and work together, and feel confident about their abilities.

What do you think has helped your students improve the most?

I think that having a variety of activities in class helps every child in a class improve. Each child has his or her own learning style, favorite types of activitie, and special abilities. Having various activities in each class, including writing, speaking, and singing, with kinetic, visual, and auditory activities allows children to shine where they excel and to improve in other areas, while gaining confidence and new skills.

Where have you lived in Japan?

I lived in Itoigawa, Niigata for two years while working as an Assistant Language Teacher in preschools, elementary schools, and a junior high school. Itoigawa is a beautiful rural town where I enjoyed snowboarding and surfing, as well as fresh seafood, and the best rice in Japan. Itoigawa is home to Japan’s first Global Geopark, and one of the only places in Japan where you can find natural jade!

    What languages do you speak?

Since my family is from Russia, I have always spoken Russian at home. I have also studied French for about seven years since junior high school, although I haven’t had a chance to speak it since coming to Japan! In university, I studied Arabic for one year and Japanese for two years. One of my favorite things is being able to speak to people from all over the world in their native language, even if it’s just a little bit.

What places in Japan are still on your bucket list?

I want to see the lavender fields of Hokkaido, and see cherry blossoms and cats in Onomichi, Hiroshima.
